Google announced on their blog yesterday that you can now look @ your internal and external links to a site so long as you have verified your site in sitemaps. I recently took a look @ a domain that I verified and got a good look @ how Google see’s the links but filters them for the serps.
Makes you think about things like the “nofollow” attribute and whether or not the transparency helps with rankings. My thoughts is that the “nofollow” attribute actually helps rankings - How else would the SE’s be able to see who is “white hat” in a competitive market? If someone is using the “nofollow” attribute then it actually seems like they are trying to do the right thing and not spam the SERPS.
Of course this is only my “perception” of how things are working. I will always fall back on the “build it and they will come philosophy.” To me links create an opportunity for the SE’s to see your site naturally and it is up to you to update your site and let time take its course. This is and will always be a big component of ranking a site like Jim Boykin will tell you as well as Rand’s interpretation of Google’s patent filed in may.

Looks like they must have taken to heart some of Danny & Rand’s chalkboard suggestions to them when they got together the other week. My only problem with their tool is that the data seems totally raw. In other words, sitewide links count as multiple entries, which we know isn’t really how it works in their algos. Makes it really difficult to parse through the garbage to get to the good stuff. Aaah… wading through links yet again.
